As the sun beat down on the high school campus, my classmates and I sat at their desks, ready for the next assignment. With her stern gaze and no-nonsense attitude, my English teacher handed out the task for the day: to describe a person we looked up to.
I remember the tension between the teacher and I, like two fighters in a ring, always ready to clash. I was a bit of a rebel, always pushing against the boundaries set before me. But as I read over the assignment, I realized I wanted to extend an olive branch to my teacher. I wanted to show her that despite our differences, I respected and admired her.
With a pen in hand, I began to write. The words flowed from my heart, describing the teacher's dedication, intelligence, and ability to inspire her students. I wrote about how she challenged us to think critically and pushed us to be our best selves.
As I handed in my essay, I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous. Would the teacher be impressed? Would she see that I was truly trying to make amends?
To my surprise, the teacher was touched by my words. She looked up from the paper with a softness in her eyes and a hint of a smile on her lips. She told me that she was impressed by my descriptive language and appreciated my willingness to open up.
I left the classroom that day with a sense of satisfaction. I had stepped towards mending the relationship with my teacher, and it felt good to be understood.

Nine years later, I am still writing because that is the only way I can express myself.
